Cabo Verde will eliminate in 2027 the specific rate of the Special Consumption Tax (ICE) applied to the importation of new and used vehicles, the president of the Sotavento Chamber of Commerce, Marcos Rodrigues, announced on Monday (28).
“We analysed the crucial issue of the automobile tax, which applies to vehicles and which we have been discussing for years. Employers also fought hard for this. Finally, it has been removed from the totality of taxes to be paid,” Rodrigues said on the sidelines of the Social Concertation Council meeting in Praia, where the government presented the broad outlines of the 2027 State Budget.
The president of the Sotavento Chamber of Commerce explained that the measure concerns an extraordinary levy on vehicles, with all other fiscal obligations associated with importation remaining in place.
“There was an extraordinary tax on vehicles, created by the previous government, which we contested for years and which made no sense whatsoever. Finally, that levy has been dropped,” he said.
“There are the normal duties — the customs tariffs — which must be paid on vehicles and which remain. There is nothing further to add,” he noted.
In 2022, a specific Special Consumption Tax (ICE) rate of approximately €1,815 was introduced on vehicle imports, with the exception of electric vehicles and cars imported by emigrants returning permanently to the country.
At the time, the government justified the measure on the grounds of promoting electric mobility and defended the progressivity of the ICE, given that rates applied to older vehicles were higher.
