Finance ministers and central bank governors from BRICS member states have called for sweeping reform of international financial institutions, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, to strengthen the representation of emerging-market economies in global economic governance.
"With the growing participation of emerging-market and developing economies in global output and growth, the reform of global economic governance remains a BRICS priority," the officials said in a joint statement released on Thursday.
According to Reuters, the ministers also called for international financial institutions that are "more representative, transparent and accountable", at a time when emerging economies are bearing the brunt of oil price volatility and trade tariffs imposed by the United States.
"We remain deeply concerned about the unilateral imposition of trade and financial measures, including the increase of tariffs and non-tariff measures, which distort trade and are incompatible with World Trade Organization rules," the statement read.
On the financial side, the officials also called for progress on payment system interoperability among bloc members, with the aim of facilitating faster, more accessible, efficient and secure cross-border transactions.
India, which hosted the BRICS Leaders' Summit over the weekend, pushed for advances in linking the digital currencies of the bloc's member states.
The New Delhi summit brought together the leaders of Russia, China and Iran, against a backdrop of heightened trade tensions and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
