Botswana’s export revenues recorded a 3% increase in June this year, according to the International Merchandise Trade Statistics for the period. The growth was mainly driven by diamond exports, which rose 3.3% in the month.
Diamonds remain the main driver of Botswana’s exports, holding the largest share of the total. They are followed by copper and electrical machinery and equipment, which complete the list of the country’s most significant external sales products.
“Diamonds continue to dominate Botswana’s export basket, maintaining their role as the main source of foreign revenues,” the report stated. The analysis confirms that the economy remains heavily dependent on this natural resource.
Asia remained the largest destination for Botswana’s exports. Most of the sales were diamonds, while copper ranked second, reinforcing the importance of these two products in trade relations with the continent.
Within the Asian region, the United Arab Emirates stood out as the main buyer, followed by India and China. For the first two, nearly all exports were diamonds, while for China the bulk consisted of copper. The European Union also played a significant role in Botswana’s external trade, receiving a considerable share of exports. Within this bloc, Belgium emerged as the main destination, with purchases focused almost exclusively on diamonds.
Regarding imports, Botswana in June showed a strong reliance on essential goods. Fuel led the way, followed by food, beverages and tobacco, and electrical machinery and equipment, highlighting the centrality of these products for domestic consumption.
