The governments of Angola and Zimbabwe have ratified the Establishment Agreement of the Fund for Export Development in Africa (FEDA), the equity investment vehicle of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), the bank announced on Tuesday, 8 September.
“FEDA has recorded significant progress in expanding its membership framework, with the Republic of Senegal and the Republic of Liberia acceding to the FEDA Establishment Agreement, and the Republic of Zimbabwe and the Republic of Angola ratifying the agreement,” Afreximbank said in a press statement.
The bank, which is dedicated to financing and promoting African trade, noted that “these latest developments further reinforce FEDA’s growing membership and its continent-wide mandate, reflecting its strategic importance in bridging Africa’s equity financing gap.”
The accession of Senegal and Liberia brings the total number of FEDA member countries to 24. Together with the ratification by Angola and Zimbabwe, the developments will enable the Fund to strengthen its capacity to support strategic investment opportunities in industrialisation and the processing of critical minerals across these countries.
Sectors covered under the Fund’s mandate include logistics, agricultural transformation, energy, manufacturing, financial services, and strategic mineral processing.
For Afreximbank and FEDA President George Elombi, the accessions and ratifications “demonstrate the growing confidence of African governments in the institutions they own and control, as well as their commitment to building strong institutions capable of mobilising and deploying African capital for Africa’s development.”
Quoted in the statement, Elombi added that “FEDA’s equity instruments will become central to the execution of strategic industrial projects at the national and regional levels” as part of the broader African industrialisation process.
Afreximbank’s financial commitment to FEDA has increased from US$100 million to US$1.3 billion, “enabling the Fund to expand its investment activities across a wider range of regions and sectors,” the statement concluded.
