One of the strongest indicators of macroeconomic stability across African economies is low inflation, commonly measured through changes in the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
When CPI increases remain moderate and predictable, this signals price stability, creating tangible benefits for households, businesses and policymakers alike.
Countries with low and stable CPI growth are generally better positioned to sustain economic growth and attract investment. This is particularly important at a time when global shocks — especially those linked to the Middle East — are driving up energy and food costs, fuelling inflationary pressures across poorer nations.
According to the World Bank, inflation in several African regions had already been slowing significantly before the latest wave of global disruptions.
Median inflation fell from 4.4% in 2024 to 3.7% in 2025, with around 70% of African countries — 33 out of 47 — recording slower price growth.
Countries such as Angola, Ethiopia, Ghana and Nigeria posted significant declines in inflation, reflecting improved macroeconomic management and more stable financial conditions.
In addition, stronger external balances and increased foreign currency inflows — driven by higher export revenues from commodities such as metals, minerals and beverages — helped maintain overall price stability.
At the macroeconomic level, low inflation strengthens the credibility of economic policies and improves overall economic performance.
African countries with better inflation control have recorded stronger private consumption and investment, both considered key drivers of economic growth. In fact, improved macroeconomic stability has helped preserve economic activity across the region despite ongoing global uncertainty.
