And the Ten African Cities With the Lowest Cost of Living at the End of 2025 Are…?

Across Africa, the cost of living has emerged as a fundamental indicator of economic well-being, social stability, and political confidence. As inflation, currency depreciation, and rising import bills push prices higher in many countries, consumers are being forced to spend a disproportionate share of their income on basic necessities such as food, transport, and energy.

In contrast, a low cost of living provides African countries with a significant—and often underestimated—economic advantage.

When daily expenses remain low, citizens enjoy greater well-being, governments face less social pressure, and businesses operate in a more predictable environment. Affordability increases purchasing power, promotes stability, and allows for more equitable and sustainable growth.

The recent experience of Malawi is a good example of these benefits. The cost of living recorded in November is being presented as a quick and early win of the current administration’s policies under President Arthur Peter Mutharika, following evidence of relief in household expenses.

The cost of living fell by 0.07% in November, mainly due to a decrease in food prices, according to the Cost of Living Report by the Consumers Association of Malawi (CAMA).

According to the data, the total cost of living declined from 975.2 kwacha in October to 974.5 kwacha in November, when transport is taken into account.

The cost of basic meals, excluding transport, fell from 895.2 kwacha to 894.5 kwacha. Food prices, which account for the largest share of household expenditure, decreased by an average of 0.15%.

During periods when the cost of living declined—mainly due to a slowdown in food price increases—the impact on families and the broader economy became evident, demonstrating how affordability can act as a stabilising force, even in structurally constrained economies.

One of the most evident benefits of a low cost of living is its impact on household well-being. Lower food prices provided practical relief to families in Malawi, where food represents a large share of household budgets.

Greater affordability improved food security, reduced the risk of hunger, and freed up scarce funds for healthcare, education, and basic savings.

In the table below are the African countries with the lowest cost of living at the end of the year, according to Numbeo—a collaborative online platform that collects cost-of-living data.
