The African Union (AU) will mark the 62nd anniversary of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on 24 May 2025, under the theme: “Revisiting Our History, Shaping Our Future.”
The commemorative events will celebrate the continent’s journey towards unity, liberation, and self-determination, while fostering dialogue on Africa’s future development and integration.
Established on 25 May 1963 in Addis Ababa, the OAU was the precursor to the African Union and played a pivotal role in supporting the independence movements across the continent. The anniversary serves not only as a celebration of historical milestones but also as a reflection on how far Africa has progressed in areas such as peacebuilding, governance, economic development, and regional cooperation.
The 2025 commemoration will include a series of cultural exhibitions, heritage showcases, and addresses by African leaders, scholars, and youth representatives. The African Union Commission has also planned forums highlighting continental achievements, as well as ongoing challenges in areas such as climate resilience, youth empowerment, and continental free trade.
AU officials emphasised that this year’s theme underscores the importance of preserving Africa’s rich history and using it as a guide to shape inclusive, innovative, and sustainable futures. Events will take place across multiple member states, with a flagship celebration hosted at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa.
The commemoration presents an opportunity to honour the visionaries of Pan-Africanism, renew commitment to African solidarity, and inspire the next generation of leaders to carry forward the ideals of unity and progress.
