The Italian Mattei Plan, which aims to develop Africa and prevent migration flows to Europe, will have four new members, bringing the total to 18, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced on Wednesday (4).
“The initiative involved 14 countries, and in 2026, we will extend it to four others: the Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Gabon, and Zambia,” said the prime minister at the conference “Laying the foundations for employment in Africa” at the Bank of Italy.
The Italian strategy for the continent is an initiative launched by Meloni to build an equal partnership with African nations, focused on energy, infrastructure, education, health, and agriculture.
Supported by more than €1.2 billion, it aims to promote development, curb irregular immigration, and transform Italy into an energy hub in the Mediterranean.
The member countries that were already part of the plan are: Algeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Mozambique, and Tunisia. There are also five “additional partners”: Angola, Ghana, Senegal, Mauritania, and Tanzania.
