The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a €120 million non-sovereign partial credit guarantee to support Mota-Engil Africa in securing a sustainability-linked loan worth at least €170 million. This operation marks a significant milestone in the AfDB’s relationship with the African private sector.
This is the first time the AfDB is providing direct support to a company in the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) sector, underlining the importance of this industry for inclusive economic development in Africa. The operation also aims to contribute to job creation and the development of climate-resilient infrastructure.
According to a statement cited by Jornal de Angola, the credit guarantee will enable Mota-Engil Africa to access long-term commercial financing. It will also help extend the average maturity of its debt profile, strengthen the company’s financial position, and enhance its capacity to implement sustainable infrastructure projects across the continent.
The transaction reflects the AfDB’s commitment to diversifying its support to the private sector and promoting large-scale sustainable infrastructure. It is aligned with the 2024–2033 Ten-Year Strategy of the AfDB, which aims to foster economic development and structural transformation across Africa.
Solomon Quaynor, AfDB Vice-President for the Private Sector, Infrastructure, and Industrialization, stated that this operation is a clear demonstration of the Bank’s commitment to mobilizing private capital for green and inclusive growth in Africa.
“This guarantee will allow Mota-Engil Africa to move forward with projects aligned with its sustainability goals,” he added.
Mota-Engil Africa employs over 24,500 people across the continent, more than 95% of whom are African citizens. The company plays a key role in delivering high-impact infrastructure initiatives in several regions of Africa.
With this guarantee, the AfDB strengthens its partnership with companies contributing to the development of essential infrastructure for Africa’s growth. Mota-Engil Africa will thus be able to continue expanding its portfolio of sustainable and inclusive projects throughout the continent.
