Despite the political and social turmoil that took place in the last quarter of 2024, the tourism sector in Mozambique continued to grow, with the inauguration of 208 new businesses over the past year, according to Volta ao Mundo magazine, which cites government figures.
Among the establishments inaugurated were 68 accommodation units, 108 catering and drinking establishments and 32 travel agencies, in the country’s main tourist cities and provinces. The government’s survey also indicates that 1,231 professionals have entered the sector’s operational areas.
With the aim of encouraging the emergence of micro, small and medium-sized companies in the tourism sector, the state has funded six projects with a total value of 5.5 million meticals. The initiatives cover the provinces of Zambézia, Tete and Gaza, as well as the city of Maputo.
The growth recorded contrasts with the estimated losses of around 500 million meticals caused by the cancellation of bookings during the festive season, between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
According to the Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA), the post-election protests during this period directly affected the performance of the sector, which is considered one of the most important in the context of the high season.
