Port of Beira Aims to Reach 400,000 TEU of Cargo Handling by Year End

The operations director of Cornelder Mozambique, Miguel de Jenda, said on Thursday 8 August that the Port of Beira could reach an all-time containerised cargo handling record of 400,000 TEU (equivalent to 20 feet, a standard measurement used to calculate the volume of a container) by the end of this year.

Quoted by Radio Moçambique, the source explained that this historic milestone, which is almost a given, will be reached thanks to the new markets in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia and Zimbabwe, which have recently been conquered.

The Port of Beira’s cargo terminal manager is convinced of this because, from January to July this year, the port has handled 225,000 TEU of various types of cargo, which represents an increase of 41% compared to the same period last year.

The containers handled contained minerals, food and forestry products. Aware of these new challenges imposed by the market, Cornelder de Moçambique has already set in motion a plan to expand the fertiliser and mineral terminals.

In October 2023, DE reported that the government intended to invest 18.3 billion meticals (290 million dollars) in the expansion and modernisation of the Port of Beira, located in Sofala province, northern Mozambique, pointing out that this is one of the most important infrastructures in the country and in the southern African region.

The government has approved the business plan for the Port of Beira, in which investment of up to 18.3 billion meticals (290 million dollars) is planned over the next 15 years for the expansion and modernisation of the infrastructure,” said the Mozambican Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala.

Speaking during the opening ceremony of the Business Forum for the Beira Corridor, the minister said that the studies already carried out point to an exponential increase in the volume of containers handled at the port over the next few decades.
