Angola: Sacomar Terminal in Namibe Resumes Operations After More Than Three Years of Closure

The Sacomar Terminal, located in the Angolan port of Namibe, has resumed operations after more than three years of closure, receiving a cargo ship from China that is expected to handle 26,420 tons of pig iron destined for the Asian market, according to a statement cited by Lusa.

According to the document, the port of Namibe, having benefited from the construction of a new pier inaugurated in October 2025, sees the Sacomar Mineral Terminal once again consolidating Angola’s position on the international trade route.

The coordinator of the Terminal Management Committee, Luís César, described the resumption of operations as “a historic milestone and a decisive step toward establishing the terminal as a strategic platform supporting mining exports, with a focus on operational efficiency and competitiveness.”

The representative of the shipping agency Seatrade, José Sequeira, highlighted that the ship’s arrival constitutes “an asset for the sector,” emphasizing the port’s conditions, particularly its draft, which allows it to accommodate large vessels.

The port of Namibe thus begins a new phase of capitalizing on the investments made under the Integrated Development Project for Moçâmedes Bay.

The terminal’s renovation, financed by Japan as part of an investment of approximately $600 million and carried out by the Toyota Tsusho consortium, equipped the facility with a 520-meter quay capable of accommodating large vessels, with an estimated maximum capacity of 10 million tons per year.

The Angolan government plans to connect the terminal, via road and rail, to the Moçâmedes Railway to transport minerals from the provinces of Huíla, Cuando-Cubango, and Cubango.
