Developing Future Leaders. The Impact of the Absa Graduate Programme

In an increasingly dynamic and competitive labour market, Graduate Programmes have emerged as a strategic response to the development and professional growth of young graduates.

Committed to contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda, Absa Bank Mozambique is developing its Graduate Programme, an initiative aimed at preparing a new generation of high-performance professionals.

Lasting 10 months, this programme is designed specifically for young graduates from higher education institutions, with a maximum age of 25. Since 2016, our Graduate Programme has produced more than 126 new professionals for the domestic market, 81% of whom have been integrated by the Bank itself.

One of the programme’s many success stories is that of Jesse Fuleque, who joined in 2023. With a degree in Accounting and Auditing, Jesse had the opportunity to explore three different areas of banking: Finance, Marketing and Corporate Relations, and Channels.

This experience allowed him not only to develop essential technical skills for his career, but also to boost his personal growth. At the end of the programme, he was invited to join one of the areas in which he excelled the most, starting his career at Absa Bank Mozambique in January 2024.

Reflecting on his journey, he says: ‘The Graduate Programme was an important gateway for me to enter the labour market. After graduating, I needed to apply the knowledge I had acquired at university. Absa gave me that opportunity and, what’s more, it allowed me to explore different areas of my training, which, over time, I fell in love with.’

This view is shared by many other participants in the programme. Leandra Ouana, one of the members of the 2024 edition, also testifies to the positive impact of the initiative. ‘I was accepted onto the programme in February 2024 and so far I’ve been through two areas in which I’ve learned a lot.

By dealing with the diversity of the teams here at the Bank, I was able to learn how to interact with people effectively, thus achieving the objectives set. The experience has helped me to develop skills I hadn’t known I had before, such as creativity and the ability to think outside the box.

Actions such as making presentations, drawing up accurate reports and even implementing projects are valuable lessons that will certainly boost my career,’ says Leandra. The selection process is rigorous and includes various dynamics, such as interviews and other methodologies focused on assessing candidates’ soft skills.

Skills such as creativity, communication, leadership, proactivity, teamwork, strategic vision, flexibility and conflict resolution are carefully analysed.

Hanifa Hassangy, Director of Human Capital at Absa Bank Mozambique, explains: ‘This programme is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive learning experience.

The young graduates have the opportunity to acquire technical and behavioural skills, benefit from mentoring and rotation opportunities in different areas of the Bank, allowing them to gain a broader view of the business and develop a solid knowledge base.

This immersion in the working environment allows participants to apply academic knowledge in practical situations and thus gain valuable experience.’
