In a world increasingly aware of the importance of environmental preservation, Absa Bank Mozambique has taken a significant step by joining the Club of Friends of Maputo National Park (PNAM). This strategic partnership not only reinforces the Bank’s commitment to sustainability, but also highlights its pioneering role in the conservation of Mozambican ecosystems.
It was on 10 April 2024 that Absa formalised its membership of the PNAM Friends Club, becoming the first institutional member of this group dedicated to environmental conservation. This move is a natural extension of Absa’s commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 13, which calls for urgent action against climate change.
Pedro Carvalho, Managing Director of Absa Bank Mozambique, made no secret of the Bank’s enthusiasm in joining this initiative. ‘It’s a huge honour for Absa to be a Friend of Maputo National Park,’ he said. ‘We have seized this opportunity to collaborate with the PNAM because we understand the impact of the work carried out by the Park in all its dimensions. We certainly want to be a magnet and be able to inspire and attract other partners to this noble cause.’
With an initial duration of three years, the partnership with PNAM will focus on high-impact projects, such as the Man-Wildlife Coexistence project. This project aims to promote activities that ensure the defence of people, goods and animals, encouraging a balance between the development of local communities and wildlife conservation.
This partnership is part of Absa’s endeavour to ensure that all its activities are aligned with the principles of the Paris Agreement and the United Nations SDGs
This recently signed partnership with the Maputo National Park is part of a wider effort by Absa Bank Mozambique to ensure that all its activities are aligned with the principles of the Paris Agreement and the United Nations SDGs. The Bank is committed to respecting the UN Global Compact Principles and to following the relevant national and international policies on sustainability and environmental preservation.
In addition to the direct impact on the conservation of the ecosystems in which it operates, this partnership is a clear example of how financial institutions can promote sustainability. In the coming years, this collaboration is expected to strengthen and expand, with the implementation of new initiatives and projects that contribute to the protection of Mozambique’s ecosystems and the well-being of its communities.
Absa Bank Mozambique not only reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and social responsibility through this partnership, but also invites other institutions and society in general to follow suit. This joint effort not only protects Mozambique’s rich biodiversity, but also promotes the balanced development of local communities, ensuring a more sustainable future for all.
By leading by example, Absa demonstrates that collaboration between different sectors can generate positive results for both the environment and society. And so, with each firm step in the direction of sustainability, the Bank reaffirms its role as a leader in sustainable banking practices, inspiring a greener and more resilient world
