TotalEnergies Commits to “Providing Gas for Domestic Consumption, Not Just for Export”

The Managing Director of TotalEnergies in Mozambique, Maxime Rabilloud, announced on Monday, September 1, in Maputo, the company’s commitment to ensuring that part of the gas extracted under the Mozambique LNG project will be allocated to the domestic market, contributing to the country’s economic development. He emphasized that the company’s goal is for Mozambican gas to directly benefit Mozambicans, not just international markets.

“Our presence must be reflected in the country’s sustainable development now, not only when gas production begins,” said Rabilloud during the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding between TotalEnergies and the Northern Integrated Development Agency (ADIN), held at the Ministry of Planning and Development.

He explained that TotalEnergies sees Mozambique as a strategic partner, not only in the energy export chain but also as a direct beneficiary of its own resources.

“All this work on socio-economic development, as well as the commitment we are making today to bring what we call domestic gas to the country, aims to further develop the national economy through gas not only for export but also for Mozambique,” he reinforced.

The Mozambique LNG project, whose construction phase involves Mozambican companies, is expected to represent an investment of approximately 5 billion USD (about 315 trillion meticais) over the coming years. Rabilloud highlighted that this initial phase is already generating economic and social impact, creating more than 8,000 jobs in Palma and Mocímboa da Praia since 2021, through initiatives in health, education, agriculture, fishing, and local trade.

The commitment to supplying gas for domestic consumption comes amid growing debate about the country’s energy sovereignty and the need to leverage natural resources to drive industrialization and improve the population’s quality of life.

During his speech, the TotalEnergies representative also highlighted the importance of close collaboration with the Government of Mozambique, describing the partnership with ADIN as an “exemplary model of cooperation” and one of the essential conditions for the gas project’s success.

“We want to be humble working partners with the Government for the socio-economic development of the country and the Cabo Delgado region,” he concluded.
