The French oil company Total, reaffirms the continuity of the liquefied natural gas exploration project in Palma, Cabo delgado province.
The reaffirmation was expressed, this Monday, by Total?s CEO, Patrick Pouyanné, as he left the meeting with the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi.
In a short statement to the press, Patrick Pouyanné said that as soon as security is restored in the region, Total will resume its activities.
Recall that after the final investment decision of the LNG project was made in June 2019, Total committed to invest 20 billion dollars, in area 1 of the Rovuma basin, to enable the exploration of natural gas.
Total also promised to make available $2.5 billion for contracting goods and services to be provided by Mozambican companies to the LNG project, in addition to employment opportunities and training for Mozambican citizens.
At the peak of the project, an estimated five thousand Mozambican workers are expected to be absorbed.
Projections indicate that over the next 20 years, the liquefied natural gas project will generate direct profits in the order of $60.8 billion, of which $30.9 billion will go to the Mozambican state.
As can be seen, Total has a strategic project, whose paralysis is creating economic uncertainty for the country.
And the President of the Republic, in this meeting that is being held at Total’s headquarters, wants to find solutions, together with his counterpart, to make the investment viable.
Studies indicate that there are 13, 12 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in the Rovuma basin.
