The Mozambique LNG project, led by Total, is implementing a training and recruitment program for young Mozambicans for the operations team of the first onshore Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) production venture in the country.
For this purpose, the French multinational has just announced the launching of an electronic training platform called MOOC (“Massive Open Online Course”) MOZAIC (an initiative in favor of education implemented by Total E&P Mozambique).
Ronan Bescond, Total’s general manager in Mozambique is quoted in a company press release stating that “as operator of the Mozambique LNG project, our goal is to incorporate talented young Mozambicans of both genders into our operations team.”
“Developing local skills is an integral part of our business model. Training and recruiting young Mozambicans contributes to our sustainable development objectives and responds to the commitments established with the Government of Mozambique in terms of local content,” he said.
Total also mentions that the MOOC MOZAIC platform will be open to enrollments for students aged 18 to 25 years old who have completed at least the medium level of the National Education System.
“The platform consists of a free 9-week online training course covering basic mathematics, oil and gas sciences, and the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry. The MOOC model will enable a large number of students in Mozambique to access the training and potentially employment in the project during the operations phase,” the source said.
According to the statement, participants who successfully complete the MOOC MOZAIC platform course will be eligible to participate in the selection process for additional training at Mozambique LNG Academy, Total’s training center based in Maputo.
“The Mozambique LNG Academy will provide free training to 400 young Mozambicans to assume positions as operators, maintenance technicians (mechanical, electrical and instrumentation), health, safety and environment technicians, and logisticians on the Mozambique LNG project,” he said.
The Mozambique LNG project includes the development of the Golfinho and Atum fields, located in the Area 1 Offshore, and the construction of a factory with two liquefaction units with a capacity of 13.12 million tons per year in the Rovuma basin, in Cabo Delgado.
Area 1 contains about 65 Tcf of gas resources, of which 18 Tcf will be developed with the first two liquefaction units. The Final Investment Decision for the Mozambique LNG project was announced on June 18, 2019, and the project expects to enter production in 2024.
