The provincial government of Tete has announced a reinforced inspection drive against the illegal sale of fuel, as the clandestine trading of petrol and diesel continues across several neighbourhoods in the city.
The measure was announced by the director of the Provincial Infrastructure Service, Otávio Semba, who revealed the formation of a multi-sector team tasked with intensifying enforcement operations and curbing the informal fuel trade.
According to the newspaper O País, the decision follows complaints about the persistent sale of petrol and diesel outside licensed filling stations, particularly in areas where supply has been irregular.
Among the affected neighbourhoods is Mateus Sansão Muthemba, where some consumers continue to rely on the informal market to secure fuel supplies.
On the streets, a litre of petrol or diesel is being sold for between 140 and 160 meticais — significantly above the official prices charged at authorised service stations.
Otávio Semba said authorities intend to strengthen inspections and take action against operators selling fuel without a licence.
The official also assured that the shortage experienced in recent months is expected to ease, as filling stations have begun receiving fuel supplies with greater regularity.
Despite the improvement in supply, clandestine fuel sales continue to concern authorities, particularly due to inflated prices and the safety risks associated with storing and trading fuel outside legally established conditions.
