Sasol: Gas and Electricity Project Estimated at $1B to Be Completed in September

South African petrochemical company Sasol expects to conclude its Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) project, valued at one billion dollars (62.3 billion meticals),in September this year. It is being implemented in the district of Inhassoro, in the province of Inhambane, in the southern region of Mozambique.

‘This is a billion dollar project that will come to an end in September,’ said Sasol’s chairman and CEO, Simon Baloy, after a meeting in Maputo with the head of state, Daniel Chapo.

He explained that the PSA will guarantee the production of 23 million gigajoules of gas a year, which will feed the Temane Thermal Power Plant (CTT), to produce 450 Megawatts (MW) of electricity, as well as the LPG (cooking gas) factory, which will produce 30,000 tonnes a year, 75% of the demand for cooking gas in Mozambique, and also light oil and surplus gas for export.

‘We’ve been in this country for more than 20 years and will be for the next 20 years and more, if possible. As such, the completion of the project is an exciting chapter in Sasol’s history in Mozambique,’ he emphasised.

After five months of social unrest following the general elections on 9 October, Baloy praised the steps taken towards national peace through the political dialogues made possible by the government.

‘We saw that there were some challenges. We were enthusiastic about the stability that the President is bringing to the country, together with all the partners, to create a favourable place for businesses. And we are pleased to continue contributing to the development of Sasol and Mozambique,’ said Simon Baloy.

On Wednesday morning, 2 April, Parliament unanimously, acclamatorily and definitively approved the law on the political agreement to pacify the country, including the revision of the Mozambican President’s Constitution and the powers of the President.

The law, approved by the four caucuses that make up the Mozambican parliament, is based on the agreement between the head of state, Daniel Chapo, and all the political parties, signed on 5 March and submitted to the Assembly of the Republic for urgent consideration.
