Mozambique is set to benefit from the Afungi Shuttle, a new maritime service launched by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), one of the world's largest container shipping and logistics groups. The new connection was established to support the development of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Afungi, Cabo Delgado province, through coastal feeder links from the ports of Nacala and Maputo.
The new service connects Afungi to MSC's international maritime network, strengthening the flow of cargo destined for the LNG project. The initiative is designed to respond to growing economic activity in northern Mozambique by facilitating the delivery of essential goods to the development site.
According to the company, the Afungi Shuttle was conceived to carry construction materials, machinery, industrial equipment, spare parts, and other goods required for operations at Afungi, with the aim of making the project's logistical supply chain more efficient.
Beyond the coastal link, the service enables cargo to reach Afungi via MSC's main commercial routes connecting Europe, the Mediterranean, the Americas, Asia, the Middle East, and Southern Africa. The operation also benefits from MSC's established local presence in Mozambique and its broader international logistics network.
MSC says customers will now be able to manage the entire shipping operation through a single booking and a single commercial point of contact for the full duration of the cargo journey. This integrated solution is intended to simplify transport management and improve coordination of shipments destined for Afungi.
By incorporating the coastal leg directly into the MSC booking, the service was developed to facilitate cargo planning and reduce the complexity of multi-stage logistics operations. The company notes that this approach eases the administrative burden for clients managing freight across several legs within the region.
The launch of the Afungi Shuttle reflects continued investment in infrastructure and logistics tied to Mozambique's LNG project development. The initiative aims to strengthen cargo transport capacity for operations at Afungi.
In this context, maritime connections through the ports of Nacala and Maputo reinforce the role of these facilities as primary entry points for cargo destined for the project. At the same time, the new service contributes to improved logistical integration between the south, centre, and north of the country.
In March, MSC announced it would apply a war surcharge to cargo bound for several African countries and Indian Ocean islands, including Mozambique, after maritime traffic was affected by the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East, with disruptions reported at the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb strait.
