Mozambique’s Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME) has assured the public that fuel supply across the country is operating normally, despite queues reported over recent hours at several filling stations in the city of Maputo.
According to a ministry statement reviewed by Diário Económico, the queues do not reflect a stock rupture and are confined to part of the supply network. MIREME said the disruptions were caused by logistical difficulties that emerged over the extended long weekend, which affected the loading and regular distribution of fuel.
To restore normal supply, operational teams were mobilised at the Matola terminal, where tanker trucks are being loaded for distribution to fuel stations. On Tuesday alone (29), 1.176 million litres of petrol were loaded.
That volume represents approximately 98% of Maputo’s average daily petrol consumption, estimated at around 1.2 million litres. MIREME said this loading rate demonstrates that distribution operations are returning to normal.
Despite the disruptions, the ministry guaranteed that available petrol reserves are sufficient to cover Maputo’s needs until the arrival of the next maritime shipment. The vessel is expected to dock on 1 October, carrying eight thousand tonnes of fuel.
In response to the situation, MIREME urged consumers to remain calm and to avoid purchasing fuel in quantities beyond their immediate needs. The appeal is aimed at preventing a demand surge that could place additional pressure on the distribution network.
To reduce the risk of further disruptions, the ministry said it plans to strengthen coordination among the various players in the supply chain. Measures under consideration include extending loading hours at terminals and opening operations on Saturdays.
MIREME said these steps should help ensure greater consistency in fuel supply, particularly during extended long weekends and periods of elevated demand. The ministry also committed to continuously monitoring loading and distribution operations in coordination with sector operators.
