Mota-Engil África has signed a contract valued at $207 million to carry out preparatory works at Afungi, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, under a project linked to Area 4 of the Mozambique Rovuma Venture, led by ExxonMobil.
According to Portuguese news agency Lusa, the contract will be executed in a consortium with Italian company Bonatti and carries a 27-month completion timeline. The award was disclosed by Mota-Engil to Portugal's securities market regulator, the Comissão do Mercado de Valores Mobiliários (CMVM).
The scope of works includes earthmoving, construction of infrastructure, development of the second phase of the pioneer camp and the operational camp, as well as other complementary structures.
The contract also covers the operation and maintenance of the camps constructed during the works execution period. Mota-Engil indicated that works are expected to commence immediately.
The company said the award strengthens its order book in Mozambique and consolidates the group's presence in a region that presents significant growth potential, driven primarily by investment associated with natural gas projects.
Afungi, located in the district of Palma, is home to several of the country's major natural gas projects under development, including infrastructure linked to the exploitation of resources in the Rovuma Basin.
Area 4 is one of the principal natural gas concessions in Cabo Delgado and encompasses projects considered strategic for the expansion of Mozambique's liquefied natural gas industry.
