Megaprojects in Mozambique, mostly in the energy and natural resources sectors, contributed 630 million dollars (38.6 billion meticals) to state revenue in 2024, a drop of 3.4 per cent on the previous year, according to the Ministry of Finance’s budget execution report.
According to the document, the total revenue collected by the state increased by 5.7 per cent in one year, reaching 5.6 billion dollars (344.8 billion meticals). However, the share of megaprojects in this amount fell from 12.3 per cent in 2023 to 11.2 per cent in 2024.
The energy sector was the main contributor to megaproject revenues, generating 364 million dollars (22.3 billion meticals), which represents a 55 per cent increase on the previous year, when the amount collected was 215.7 million dollars (14.3 billion meticals).
On the other hand, state income from oil and gas fell sharply by 37.6 per cent to 137.9 million dollars (9.1 billion meticals). Megaprojects linked to the exploitation of mineral resources generated 89.9 million dollars (5.9 billion meticals), a decrease of 38.6 per cent year-on-year.
In 2023, the total revenue collected by the state totalled 5.3 billion dollars (326.2 billion meticals), of which 640 million dollars (40 billion meticals) came from megaprojects.
The figures now released show an overall increase in state revenue, but also a reduction in the relative contribution of large foreign investments to the state budget.
