TotalEnergies Eyes Accelerated Phase Two of Mozambique LNG Project

TotalEnergies is considering accelerating the second phase of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Mozambique, taking advantage of construction teams already on the ground and operational synergies with the first phase of the development.

The possibility was raised on Monday (28) by TotalEnergies Chief Executive Patrick Pouyanné during the presentation of the company’s Strategy and Outlook 2026, at which the French energy major outlined its production plans beyond 2030.

“Indeed, on the LNG front, there is something that was mentioned by Nicolas Terraz that we could accelerate: it is the second phase of the Mozambique LNG project,” Pouyanné said, referring to the prospect of bringing forward development of that stage of the project.

According to the chief executive, acceleration could be achieved by capitalising on existing synergies and keeping construction teams mobilised on site, avoiding demobilisation and allowing work to continue without interruption.

“You probably noticed that our colleagues at ExxonMobil are launching a new project. They are requesting access to additional reserves from the unitised area, which gives us the opportunity to also access more reserves,” Pouyanné explained.

“There is a plan that would allow us to accelerate the second phase, leveraging synergies and avoiding the demobilisation of construction teams on site. This gives us a fairly broad resource base, which allows us to move forward,” he added.

TotalEnergies is currently developing the first phase of the Mozambique LNG project in Area 1, with first production targeted for 2029. According to the company’s President of Exploration and Production, Nicolas Terraz, construction is advancing “at full steam”.

Terraz also disclosed that approximately 10,000 people are currently working on site and that Area 1 holds gas reserves equivalent to 65 trillion cubic feet (approximately 1.84 trillion cubic metres). He noted that “there is more to do beyond the first phase we are now building”.
