Minister Pale in Japan, Reaffirms Country’s Commitment to Power Generation Projects

Mozambique’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Estevão Pale, has met representatives of Japanese companies with investments in the hydrocarbon sector in Mozambique, with the aim of reaffirming the Government’s commitment to advancing and developing natural gas projects, especially in the Rovuma Basin.

The minister held bilateral meetings with producers, consumers and investors involved in ongoing projects in the Rovuma Basin, including MITSUI, the concessionaire with a 20% stake in the Mozambique LNG project and a buyer of LNG volumes, JERA, Tokyo Gas and Tohoku Electric, Japanese companies that purchase LNG from the same project.

He also met representatives of JBIC (Japan Bank for International Cooperation) and NEXI (Nippon Export and Investment Insurance), institutions with financing in the order of US$5 billion in the Mozambique LNG project.

Pale said that the meetings aimed to assure partners that Mozambique gives full priority to the projects being developed in the Ruvuma Basin and that the government is doing everything possible to restart the projects and thus guarantee the supply of LNG to Japan.

These meetings are part of efforts at strategic cooperation and promotion of investor confidence, in the context of the reactivation and development of projects in the Rovuma Basin.

Mozambique has been a producer of LNG since 2022, with the start of production of the Coral Sul floating LNG platform.

On Friday (20-06), Minister Pale addressed the LNG Producer Consumer Conference (LNG PCC) 2025 in Tokyo.
