Natural gas production in the Búzi Block, located in Sofala province, is expected to begin at the end of 2026, according to Rudêncio Morais, research and production manager at Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos (ENH). The information was shared during the 2nd Indonesia-Africa Forum, held in Bali, as reported by the newspaper Noticias.
The natural gas extracted from the Búzi Block will be used to supply a thermoelectric power station in Sofala, and a client has already been secured to buy the resource, according to Morais. The discovery is currently being evaluated and a development plan will be submitted to the government by the end of this year.
In parallel, operations are being carried out to acquire 1050 kilometres of two-dimensional seismic, conducted by an Indonesian company, with the collaboration of ENH technicians. These activities are initially concentrated in the northern area of the block, in Búzi, and will later move on to the southern area, in Divinhe.
‘The current work plan foresees the completion of seismic acquisition operations in the northern area of the Búzi block by November 2024, with the southern area starting in December of the same year,’ explained Morais, stressing that this phase is essential for improving geological knowledge of the area and for identifying new gas prospects.
Obtaining new, more detailed seismic data aims to complement the information gathered in 2012-13, allowing for a better understanding of the block’s subsurface. ‘It is essential to obtain more precise images that will help mature the prospects identified,’ added Morais.
The submission of the development plan for the gas discovery in the Búzi Block is planned for the last quarter of 2024, in order to guarantee the start of production at the end of 2026. Buzi Hydrocarbonet, the company operating the block, holds 75 per cent of the shares, while ENH, representing the state, holds the remaining 25 per cent.
During the 2nd Indonesia-Africa Forum, the Indonesian private sector expressed interest in cooperating with Mozambican companies in the transition to more sustainable energy and in the local valorisation of mineral resources.
