The Coral Sul FLNG floating liquefied natural gas platform, operated by Italy’s Eni, reached a major milestone in the production and export of LNG on Saturday.
The milestone was the 100th shipment of LNG from the floating platform. The plant, anchored in ultra-deep waters off Cabo Delgado, has been exporting LNG on a weekly basis since November 2022. With the shipment that took place at the end of the day, the project has achieved one of its operational objectives, which was to produce and liquefy natural gas with optimum levels of safety, providing a reliable and cleaner alternative source of energy to the world from Mozambique.
The success of the Coral South FLNG Platform is embodied not only by the delivery of a national resource, liquefied natural gas, in regular shipments to Asia, but also by the effective participation of Mozambicans in the chain of this mega-project, making a concrete contribution to a safe, more economically balanced and inclusive energy transition for Mozambican and the world in general, in a global context of energy transition, said Nazário Bangalane, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Petroleum Institute (INP), reacting to the milestone announced by the Area 4 consortium. On the other hand, this milestone attests to the quality of Mozambique’s gas and the energy potential that still exists to meet the needs of a world that is still thirsty for clean energy, Bangalane concluded.
This milestone comes at a time when the concessionaire and partners are already working to find more suitable alternatives for expanding the project to increase gas recovery levels in area 4.
The Coral Sul FLNG project is operated by Eni on behalf of Mozambique Rovuma Venture (MRV), a consortium that includes ExxonMobil and China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), which holds a 70 per cent stake. The remaining 30 per cent is distributed equally between ENH, Galp and South Korean company Kogas, each with 10 per cent.
