Prime Minister Benvinda Levi warned that the Government will proceed with a gradual adjustment of fuel prices due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East, urging the public to avoid spreading panic.
“As a net fuel importer, Mozambique cannot avoid gradually adjusting prices in line with the international context,” she said in Parliament.
The Government acknowledged that global fuel prices are expected to keep rising and confirmed that mitigation measures will be implemented. It also called for calmer public communication and more responsible consumption, encouraging the use of public transport and, where possible, remote work.
Authorities recently admitted that prices may increase as early as May, reflecting higher import costs, while reassuring that fuel supplies remain available despite growing pressure on distribution.
Finance Minister Carla Loveira added that €5.2 million remains available in the fuel stabilization fund to cushion potential increases. However, in a worst-case scenario, the Government may consider a budget revision if the conflict intensifies and further drives up oil prices.
