Government: “Investments in LNG Position Mozambique as a Future Global Leader in Energy Exports”

The government has emphasised that the ongoing Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) megaprojects are positioning the country as one of the main global energy exporters. Mozambique, which has vast reserves of natural gas in the Rovuma basin, has attracted significant investment from multinationals such as TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil and Eni, which have been key to its ambitions of becoming a major global supplier of LNG, as reported by the Club of Mozambique portal .

Among the main projects is Coral South Floating LNG, with a capacity of 3.4 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), which began production at the end of 2022, and the second Coral North FLNG facility, with 3.37 MTPA, currently under development. ExxonMobil’s Rovuma LNG project, which is expected to produce 18 MTPA, is also moving forward, with tenders already launched for subsea and gas gathering works.

These megaprojects, according to the government, will be essential for increasing gas exports and growing the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), establishing LNG as the cornerstone of the Mozambican economy in the coming decades.

‘Mozambique’s participation in AEW underlines its growing importance in the global energy market, with a commitment to harnessing its natural resources to contribute to energy security and economic growth, both at national and continental level’

The Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Carlos Zacarias, will speak about these and other developments in the gas sector at African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energy, which will be held in Cape Town from 4 to 8 November. He will also discuss Mozambique’s potential to become a major gas supplier to growing markets in Asia and Europe, as well as the country’s role in the energy transition, security and diversification of energy sources.

In addition to gas projects, the minister is expected to discuss Mozambique’s growing mining sector, especially graphite production. The country is one of the world’s largest producers of this mineral, which is essential for the manufacture of electric vehicle batteries.

Indonesia recently expressed an interest in collaborating with Mozambique in battery production, which could generate new jobs and promote value-added activities.

Mozambique’s participation in AEW underlines its growing importance in the global energy market, with a commitment to harnessing its natural resources to contribute to energy security and economic growth at both national and continental level.
