Government Considers its “Premature” to Advance Dates for Resumption of Gas Projects

The resumption of gas exploration activities in Rovuma Basin, northern Cabo Delgado province, remains an unknown quantity, according to statements made on Thursday, June 2, by the Minister of Economy and Finance, Max Tonela.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 8th edition of the ‘Mozambique Conference and Exhibition on Mining, Oil & Gas and Energy’, the leader said that the government is creating conditions for the full return of investments, but that it is still too early to determine when it will resume.

“There is still work that needs to be done in order to return to investments. The government’s goal is to ensure a full stabilization of the region so that people can move around. If everything continues to go as it is, we anticipate that Total can work with the Government to decide when it will start with the projects, but right now it is too early,” he seconded.

Max Tonela defended the need for more transparency in the exploration of natural resources in order to promote the social and economic development of the country.

“The exploration of this potential should be done in a transparent way so that its benefits contribute, in the first place, to the elevation of the Mozambicans’ life, today and tomorrow”, said the minister.

For the extraction of natural resources to be put at the service of the prosperity of Mozambicans, the government is investing in strategies that promote the industrialization of the country and the participation of the national private sector in the value chain.

“We want the extractive industry to be the driving force of national industrialization, ensuring that our resources can be transformed into high value-added products, promoting more employment and boosting the domestic market and exports,” he stressed.

In this sense, Max Tonela assured that the Government has taken several measures to eliminate barriers to investment, ensure transparency and guarantee a greater participation of the national and foreign private sector in the exploration of energy resources.

Tonela stressed that Mozambique has in natural gas an important asset to help the country, Southern Africa and the world to undertake the energy transition to an era of greater preponderance of clean energy in the face of the emergency caused by the climate crisis.

“Mozambique’s commitment to the climate agenda is unequivocal. We pay attention to the development of renewable sources, to the diversification of the national energy matrix and the achievement of universal access to electricity”, emphasized the Minister of Finance.

The two-day Conference will gather more than 200 participants from 21 countries that will discuss the challenges and opportunities in the mining, oil, gas and energy sector in Mozambique, with the motto “Sustainable development throughout the mineral and energy value chain, towards a future with low carbon dioxide emissions”.
