ExxonMobil Awards $250M Pipeline Contract for Rovuma LNG Project

ExxonMobil has awarded Greek company Corinth Pipeworks a contract for the supply of approximately 250 kilometres of pipelines destined for the Rovuma LNG project, located in the Rovuma Basin in Cabo Delgado, in a deal valued at between $200 million and $250 million.

The value, equivalent to approximately €172 million to €215 million, forms part of the preparations for the development of the first phase of the liquefied natural gas megaproject led by the American energy major. The contract was awarded by the Area 4 partners, with ExxonMobil Mozambique acting as delegated operator for Rovuma LNG Phase 1. According to Corinth Pipeworks, the contract covers the manufacture of approximately 250 kilometres of longitudinally submerged arc-welded steel pipes, equivalent to around 120,000 tonnes.

The pipes will range from 20 to 24 inches in diameter and will be used in the project’s offshore pipeline network. The supply also includes anti-corrosion and concrete coatings required for the installation and operation of the infrastructure in deep waters. All production is expected to be carried out at Corinth Pipeworks’ industrial facility in Thisvi, Greece, before being shipped to Mozambique. The company stated that the materials must meet the demanding conditions associated with deepwater natural gas production, adding that the contract reinforces its international presence in the offshore energy infrastructure segment.

The new award comes just days after ExxonMobil announced pre-investment contracts totalling $1.1 billion for the procurement and manufacture of equipment considered critical to the development of Rovuma LNG. Those contracts cover engineering services, procurement and manufacture of subsea production systems, large-diameter production valves, and offshore pipelines.

At the time, ExxonMobil Mozambique’s Managing Director and Chair, Johanna Boothey, said the award represented “another important step forward for the Rovuma LNG project” and demonstrated “the strong commitment of the Area 4 partners to the responsible development of Mozambique’s world-class natural gas resources.”

The progress follows ExxonMobil’s selection of the SMDC consortium — comprising Saipem, McDermott Energy Solutions, Daewoo Engineering & Construction, and China Petroleum Engineering & Construction Corporation — to carry out engineering, procurement and construction services for the first phase of the onshore development.

Rovuma LNG is led by ExxonMobil as delegated operator of Area 4, in partnership with Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos, CNPC, Eni, KOGAS, and XRG. President Daniel Chapo expressed in July his expectation that the project’s final investment decision would be taken by September, describing Rovuma LNG as “the largest private investment project on the African continent.”

The investment is valued at approximately $20 billion and envisages the construction of 12 liquefaction modules with a combined capacity to produce 18.6 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas per year. First production is currently projected for 2031.

Mozambique has three major projects exploiting natural gas reserves in the Rovuma Basin. In addition to Rovuma LNG, TotalEnergies plans to begin exports from the Mozambique LNG project in Area 1 in 2029, while Eni has been producing gas through the Coral Sul floating platform since 2022 and is preparing to expand output with the Coral Norte project.
