Mozambique Rovuma Venture (MRV), a consortium led by Eni, has launched an international expression of interest for the construction and installation of a third floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) unit in Area 4 of the Rovuma Basin, off the coast of Cabo Delgado province, the Lusa news agency reported on Wednesday, June 24.
According to the tender notice, MRV is seeking companies interested in executing an Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Installation and Commissioning (EPCIC) contract for a new platform with a production capacity of up to 6 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas per year.
The tender, open until July 3, includes the full delivery of the unit, covering engineering, equipment procurement, construction, transport, mooring, commissioning, start-up operations, and performance testing in waters approximately 2,000 meters deep.
Competing companies must demonstrate experience in FLNG projects or comparable large-scale offshore developments carried out over the past ten years, as well as present technological solutions for gas liquefaction and storage and mooring systems.
The launch of the expression of interest comes just over a month after Eni confirmed it was assessing the development of a third FLNG project in Mozambique, following the success of Coral Sul and the advancement of Coral Norte. “In this context, Eni is currently evaluating the possibility of moving forward with a third FLNG-based project, whose success has been demonstrated by the Coral South FLNG project,” the Italian oil company stated in a communication sent to Lusa in May.
Coral Sul, in operation since 2022, currently produces around 3.4 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas per year, while Coral Norte, valued at $7.2 billion, is expected to begin production in 2028, doubling production capacity in Area 4.
At the time of the Coral Norte final investment decision, Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi stated that the project would elevate Mozambique to the position of the third-largest LNG producer in Africa, behind only Nigeria and Algeria.
MRV brings together Eni, Mozambique’s National Hydrocarbon Company (ENH), China’s CNPC, South Korea’s Kogas, and XRG of the United Arab Emirates. This comes as Mozambique simultaneously advances with the Mozambique LNG project, led by TotalEnergies, and Rovuma LNG, led by ExxonMobil, consolidating the country’s strategy to develop the vast natural gas reserves of the Rovuma Basin.
