Eni Evaluates Other Options for Gas Production in Mozambique

Italian multinational Eni is assessing different options based on land and sea to identify the most effective way to produce the resources discovered in the Rovuma Basin, Cabo Delgado province.

According to Notícias newspaper, Giorgio Vicini, general manager of Eni Rovuma Basin, operator of the Coral Sul FLNG project, explained that there are several technical alternatives to produce the gas that the company discovered in the Rovuma Basin, both in onshore and offshore facilities.

“Together with our partners and Mozambican institutions, we are evaluating different land-based and floating options to identify the most effective way to produce the country’s resources, including in light of current market conditions,” Vicini said.

The source added that the experience gained from the construction of the South Coral FLNG platform brought useful elements for decision making.

Referring to the work underway for the first export of gas from the Rovuma sedimentary basin, Giorgio Vicini said that, at the moment, the activities on the Coral Sul FLNG platform continue to progress as planned.

He detailed that the phases of anchoring the vessel and connections to the wells have been completed, as well as the commissioning of the equipment.

The general manager of Eni Rovuma Basin also specified that the production of liquefied natural gas is now about to start, with a view to the first shipment still in this second half of the year.

“We would like to point out that in 2017, when we made the final investment decision, we committed to completing the project in five years, and we have fulfilled that commitment, even with the covid-19 pandemic in the middle,” he stressed.

It should be noted that very recently, speaking after visiting the Coral Sul FLNG platform, the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Carlos Zacarias, announced that the start of the export of liquefied natural gas from the Rovuma Basin, in Cabo Delgado, is coming soon.

The Coral Sul FLNG platform arrived in Cabo Delgado in January this year from South Korea, where it was produced.

Operated by Eni Rovuma Basin, it is expected that during the production phase the platform will be able to liquefy about 3.4 million tonnes of gas per year.
