Vandalism Leaves Around 12,000 EDM Customers Without Power

Miscreants still at large vandalised the spikes of two medium-voltage power transmission poles belonging to the public company Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), leaving around 12,000 customers in the districts of Morrumbala and Dere, in the central province of Zambézia, without power

EDM explained in a statement that the case occurred late this afternoon (24), causing the collapse of a Medium Voltage Gantry in Chimuara.

‘The case has already been reported to the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) for the identification and accountability of the perpetrators,’ says EDM.

‘Equipment is currently being mobilised to replace the vandalised material and ensure that the normal electricity supply to the affected areas is restored as soon as possible,’ the document adds.

EDM regrets the inconvenience this situation is causing to affected customers and the public in general, and calls on the community to be vigilant and to report any act that jeopardises the integrity of electricity infrastructures.

According to EDM, customers can also go to the company’s offices for face-to-face assistance, where they can obtain more information or report any acts that may jeopardise the normal supply of electricity.

In fact, vandalising electrical equipment is a criminal offence and delays the achievement of the company’s goal of guaranteeing Universal Access to Energy by 2030.
