Mozambique's state electricity utility, Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), has recorded losses of three million euros as a result of vandalism targeting infrastructure on a power interconnection project with Malawi, the Portuguese news agency Lusa reported on Friday, 31 July.
Salmata Insa, head of EDM's Department for the Prevention and Combat of Vandalism, explained that the project, launched in 2022 in the central province of Tete, was designed with a total capacity of 100 megawatts (MW), with an initial phase envisaging the supply of 50 MW to Malawi.
According to Insa, completion of the infrastructure had originally been scheduled for 2024, but successive acts of vandalism affecting the installations forced repeated delays to the project timeline.
'The delivery of the project was planned for 2024,' she stated, adding that construction had suffered multiple stoppages due to damage caused to the facilities.
Insa disclosed that accumulated losses have now reached approximately three million euros — funds that, she noted, could otherwise have been directed towards other electricity network expansion projects.
'Given the acts of vandalism recorded, we have already accumulated a loss of three million euros. It is a great deal of money that could have been invested in other projects,' she said.
The infrastructure is intended to strengthen Mozambique's electricity supply to Malawi and to deepen regional energy integration. Completion of the project remains contingent on resolving the delays caused by the repeated vandalism incidents.
