Vandalised Transformers Leave 30,000 Without Power in Cabo Delgado

At least 30,000 people have been without power due to the vandalisation of transformers by rebels in Cabo Delgado, in the north of the country over the last three years, a source from Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) said on Tuesday.

Armed groups have vandalised at least 25 transformers in Cabo Delgado, said Gildo Marques, director for customer service in Pemba, cited by Mozambican television station Televisão de Moçambique.

He said there may be more transformers vandalised and people affected in regions under protection due to insecurity, points to which EDM does not yet have access.

According to Gildo Marques, the insecurity situation in Cabo Delgado has made it difficult to comply with the electrification plan for the province, mainly in the northern districts, the region most affected by the armed conflicts.

“We had planned to electrify two administrative posts in the north of the province, in Palma district, this year, but because of the situation, it was not possible.” So we had to “redouble our efforts to electrify at least all the administrative posts in the south and centre,” the director said.

Since the security situation improved with the entry of foreign forces in July of last year, Mozambique Electricity and other government entities have been restoring the infrastructure in some places where it was destroyed.

Cabo Delgado province is rich in natural gas but has been terrorised since 2017 by armed rebels, with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.

There are 784,000 internally displaced people due to the conflict, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and around 4,000 deaths, according to the ACLED conflict registration project.

Since July 2021, an offensive by government troops with Rwandan support, later joined by the Southern African Development Community (SADC), has allowed areas where a rebel presence to recover, but their flight has provoked new attacks in other districts used as a passage or temporary refuge.
