Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) is making efforts to ensure that some border posts in Tete province, in the centre of the country, are no longer dependent on electricity from neighbouring countries, the Agência de Informação de Moçambique (AIM) reported on Thursday (13).
According to the agency, the information was provided by EDM’s Director of Electrification and Projects, Sílvio Nurmomad, who pointed out that the border posts of Cuchamano, in the Changara district, which is supplied by Zimbabwe, and Calómué and Lisulo, in the Angónia district, depend on electricity from Malawi.
The inhabitants of the Biribiri and Tsangano border posts, which are supplied by Malawi, Cassacatiza, Chifunde and Zumbo from Zambia also consume electricity from abroad.
‘The border towns are part of EDM’s plan to expand the national grid, but we also come across various situations that end up causing the plan to be slightly altered along the way,’ he emphasised, lamenting ’phenomena that have come unrelated to Electricidade de Moçambique.’
Sílvio Nurmomad also said that the project to light these border posts was part of the company’s efforts to expand the network to improve the quality of energy in the city of Tete.
