The government announced on Thursday (30) that the United Kingdom has guaranteed the availability of a total of 450 million dollars (28.4 billion meticals) to finance the second and third phases of the power transmission line project linking Chimuara in Zambézia province and Nacala in Nampula, in the central and northern regions of Mozambique.
According to the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Silvino Moreno, the investment will be made available through the British company Gridworks, and the infrastructure will meet the demand of the most important economic zones, especially those located in the areas of the major projects.
‘The project will strengthen the capacity to supply energy to the central and northern regions of the country and make industrialisation viable, especially in the special economic zones of Mocuba and Nacala,’ he said, quoted by the newspaper Noticias.
He stressed that the implementation of the first phase of the power line, whose contract was initialled in October 2019, included the Chimuara-Alto Molócuè section, which was financed by the Islamic Development Bank, to the value of 200 million dollars (12.6 billion meticals).
‘The Chimuara-Nacala project is part of the prospects for Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM),’ he concluded.
