Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), the company responsible for supplying electricity in the country, needs more than 150 million meticais to repair the damage caused by flooding to the electricity grid in the southern region.
The floods affecting the southern region have caused losses of around 300 million meticais to EDM, which is working quickly to repair the damage and restore power supply. “We are working hard to repair the damage caused,” the company said.
More than 110,000 customers in the provinces of Gaza and Maputo remain without access to services due to the floods. Among the most critical areas are the district of Massingir, in Gaza, where about seven kilometers of the network were destroyed, and the district of Macaneta, in Maputo, where seven transformer stations were completely damaged.
Last Friday, January 30, EDM visited some of the affected areas, including the districts of Marracuene and Boane, in Maputo, to assess the damage and plan the necessary interventions. “The priority is to restore power supply in the most affected areas,” the company added.
To support families in shelters, EDM installed postpaid meters in 59 locations, temporarily subsidizing energy consumption and providing some relief to affected communities.
The situation highlights the extent of the impact of the floods on the electrical infrastructure in the southern region and reinforces the urgency of resources for full recovery. “The necessary financial effort exceeds 150 million meticais, but we are committed to restoring normality for all customers,” concluded EDM.
