At least 350,000 families in various parts of the country will have electricity by the end of this year as a result of the program to massify access launched in November 2019.
This is the Energy for All Program (ProEnergia), and to achieve the goals recommended in this first phase, Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), implementer of the initiative, has secured 139 million US dollars from traditional development partners in the sector.
The president of the EDM Board of Directors, Marcelino Gildo Alberto, said a few days ago that it was with these funds that, among other actions, five contractors were hired and they are already working in the field assembling the medium and low voltage lines and other necessary infrastructures in order to connect 350,000 new clients.
The source said that the works are taking place simultaneously in several parts of the country, specifying that in the city and province of Maputo the goal is to make the energy reach 24 thousand families.
The funds were allocated by several institutions, including the World Bank, the European Union, and the Kingdoms of Sweden and Norway.
The official, who considers ProEnergia an ambitious initiative, since the goal is to lead the country to the universalization of access until 2030, showed satisfaction for the rhythm of the works in course in the province of Maputo.
However, the challenges of massifying access to energy do not depend only on the installation of new lines and connection of clients, but also on maintenance and combating equipment theft.
