At least 34,000 customers of the public company Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) have been without electricity since the night of Tuesday, October 7, due to severe weather conditions affecting the province of Nampula. The information was confirmed on Wednesday by EDM in a press release cited by Lusa.

According to the company, the power outage has affected the districts of Rapale, Mecuburi, Ribàué, and Lalaua, located in the north of the country. The disruption comes as Mozambique enters the rainy season, which lasts until April next year.
EDM explained that the blackout was caused by the collapse of three medium-voltage poles following a whirlwind in Rapale. The phenomenon destroyed part of the electrical infrastructure, making it impossible to maintain regular power supply to the affected areas.
The company stated that technical teams are already on the ground working to restore the power supply as quickly as possible. EDM assured that all efforts are being made to resume services and minimize the impact on consumers.
The company also recalled that on Tuesday, around 17,000 customers were left without power in some areas of Sofala province, in central Mozambique. In that case, the outage was caused by the destruction of power poles due to uncontrolled bushfires.
With the rainy season approaching, EDM reiterated its warning about natural and human risks that threaten the stability of electricity supply in various regions of Mozambique. The company reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining grid stability and responding swiftly to incidents that disrupt service.
