Mphanda Nkuwa Joins Mozambique’s Clean Energy Transition Effort

The Mphanda Nkuwa Hydropower Project Implementation Office (GMNK) took part in Mozambique’s national consultation workshop on accelerating the energy transition, held in Maputo under the Accelerated Partnership for Renewables in Africa (APRA) initiative.

The two-day consultation, organised by the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy in partnership with APRA and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), gathered government institutions, development partners, and private-sector representatives to define priorities for Mozambique’s National Action Plan for Renewable Energy.

Speaking under the theme “Ongoing Energy Initiatives: The Case of the Mphanda Nkuwa Project,” GMNK highlighted the project’s strategic role in the country’s transition to a low-carbon future. Once completed, the 1,500-megawatt (MW) hydropower plant in Tete Province is expected to become one of Southern Africa’s largest renewable energy facilities, supplying both domestic and regional power markets.

The consultation aligns with Mozambique’s ambitions to achieve universal electricity access and diversify its energy mix. APRA—an alliance of African countries supported by development partners—aims to accelerate the continent’s renewable energy capacity, promote green industrialisation, and strengthen energy resilience.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the insights gathered from the consultations will shape a national roadmap for scaling up renewable investment, infrastructure, and policy frameworks.

Mozambique’s participation in APRA, alongside the Mphanda Nkuwa initiative, underscores the country’s growing leadership in Africa’s clean-energy transition. As major partners such as the African Development Bank and World Bank continue to back the project, Mozambique is positioning itself not only as a hydropower hub but also as a catalyst for sustainable regional integration.
