Mozambique will join a delegation of energy sector decision-makers from four Southern African countries travelling to the United States to establish partnerships aimed at strengthening and modernising the region's electricity transmission and distribution systems, according to a statement cited by Club of Mozambique.
The mission, organised by the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), will take place from 29 August to 5 September and will bring together approximately 15 representatives from the public and private sectors of Mozambique, Angola, Botswana and Zambia. The delegation will visit Denver, Colorado, and Austin, Texas.
During the visit, representatives from the four countries will meet with US companies and attend demonstrations of technologies designed to improve electricity transmission and distribution networks, including control systems based on Artificial Intelligence.
The agenda also includes meetings with public and private energy companies and regulatory bodies, among them the Colorado Public Utilities Commission and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas.
The USTDA will host a business session in Denver on 1 September, at which US companies will have the opportunity to learn about commercial opportunities in the region and present solutions to strengthen electricity grid security.
The initiative comes against a backdrop of growing demand for modern and secure energy infrastructure across Southern Africa. Population growth, urbanisation and industrial expansion — including rising energy demand driven by critical minerals extraction — are placing increasing pressure on the region's electricity systems.
In response, countries in the region have been prioritising grid modernisation and large-scale electricity interconnection projects. According to the USTDA, US companies are well positioned to contribute technologies, equipment and engineering expertise to support these initiatives.
The agency considers American companies to be at the forefront of power distribution technologies that can make electricity networks more stable, efficient and secure. For Mozambique, the mission represents an opportunity to explore these solutions and establish contacts with potential commercial partners.
