According to experts, Mozambique shows performance close to the African average in its energy system, reflecting significant progress in infrastructure and energy generation potential, although challenges in the energy transition remain.
In the 2025 Energy Transition Index (ETI), which evaluates countries’ performance and readiness for the energy transition, Mozambique ranks below countries such as Nigeria, Tunisia, Namibia, Mauritius, Morocco, Egypt, South Africa, Kenya, Algeria, and Ivory Coast, but ahead of economies such as Cameroon, Gabon, Ghana, Zambia, Senegal, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The index considers criteria such as security, equity, and sustainability of the energy system, as well as factors related to regulation, investment, innovation, and human capital.
Experts highlight that, although Mozambique has promising energy infrastructure and significant renewable energy potential, the country needs to strengthen strategic policies and investments to accelerate the energy transition and ensure reliable and sustainable energy access for the entire population.
