Mozambique and South Africa Strengthen Cooperation in the Energy Sector

The Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Estêvão Pale, met on Thursday, November 6, with his South African counterpart for Energy and Electricity, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa. The meeting aimed to prepare the binational summit between the presidents of both countries — scheduled for December in Mozambique — and to reinforce cooperation in the energy sector.

The goal of the meeting was to consolidate political and technical dialogue, aligning strategies for the development of structural projects that promote energy security in both nations. This partnership is particularly significant as South Africa continues to face an energy deficit.

According to the Savana newspaper, the meeting highlighted priority areas of cooperation, such as increasing energy production and transmission capacity. Hydropower projects, particularly Mpanda Nkuwa, and natural gas projects in the Rovuma Basin were identified as key to ensuring sustainable energy supply.

The ministers also discussed the construction, modernization, and integration of energy infrastructure, with the goal of ensuring efficient transmission, system stability, and interconnection between Mozambique and South Africa, as well as across the region — allowing energy systems to operate in an integrated and reliable manner.

During the meeting, both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to sign a memorandum of understanding in the near future, outlining principles for technical cooperation, investment, and joint project implementation in the energy sector, thereby strengthening bilateral collaboration.

Preparations for the December binational summit were among the main topics discussed. The event, to be led by the Presidents of Mozambique and South Africa, is expected to set strategic guidelines to deepen energy, economic, and regional development partnerships between the two countries.

The meeting in Maputo underscores the commitment of both governments to enhance energy cooperation and ensure progress on major projects. The partnership is expected to contribute to greater energy security, improved interconnection stability, and sustainable development across southern Africa.
