Mozambican State Electricity Company EDM Reaches 300,000 New Connections for the First Time in 45 Years

State company Eletricidade de Moçambique (EDM) has reached, for the first time in 45 years of activity, the milestone of managing to make over 300,000 new power connections in eleven months, the entity announced today in a statement.

“This milestone results from the effort that EDM is undertaking to expand the national electricity grid, simplify contracting processes and reduce the waiting time for new connections,” the company said in a statement.

This is a “historic milestone” achieved for the “first time in 45 years of activity,” it said.

EDM said that the new connections accounted for 94 percent of the target of 320,000 new customers expected this year, as part of the government’s “Energy for All” initiative.

According to Eletricidade de Moçambique, the Mozambican government has already mobilised around US$343 million (euro330 million) to “continue to ensure the massification of new electricity connections.

To this end, procurement processes are underway for suppliers of various materials, as well as consultants and contractors aimed at expanding the electricity grid in the country and the goal of universal access to electricity by 2030.
