Hydroelectric Production in Mozambique Down 2.35% by 2021

The Cahora Bassa dam, Mozambique’s main source of electricity production for domestic consumption and export, in 2021 will produce 2.35 percent less electricity than in the previous year, the company said Tuesday in a statement.

The reduction was already forecast in the last activity report of the company Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB) “due to deferred maintenance interventions in 2020” and due to the impact of covid-19.

Still, the drop turned out to be smaller than expected: the dam generated last year 14 990 GWh (gigawatt hours) of electricity instead of the 14 125 Gwh forecast.

For the year 2022, the company has planned an annual production target of 14 228 GWh taking into account “scheduled maintenance stoppages and rehabilitation projects of the power generation park,” HCB adds in a statement.

“The technical and financial indicators for 2021 allow us to assess that HCB continues to be a financially robust company, able to finance itself and honour its commitments,” said Boavida Muhambe, chairperson of the company’s board of directors, quoted in the document.

The Mozambican state holds 85% of HCB’s shares, 7.5% belong to the Portuguese national energy grid (REN) and 4% are from national investors, with the remaining 3.5% held by HCB itself.
