Government Seeks Partnership For Market Study In Mphanda Nkuwa

The Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy announced, a few days ago, that it is seeking a consultant that should help in the study of the market of power to be generated by the Mphanda Nkuwa hydroelectric project, downstream of the Cahora Bassa Dam, in Tete province.

The initiative is part of a work that has been carried out by the Executive, aimed at continuing the strategy to promote the development of energy production and transport capacity, not only to meet domestic and growing domestic and industrial demand for electricity, but also to export electricity to the regional market.

With the consultancy, the Government says it intends to assess the viability of the Mphanda Nkuwa Project in the energy markets, taking into consideration the projections of domestic and regional demand and the expansion of the transmission network.

Mozambique is recognised as an energy-rich country with hydropower potential to generate 15 GW. It also has numerous mineral coal resources and vast, relatively untapped gas reserves, as well as many opportunities in solar and wind power generation.

The country continues to explore various power generation and transmission projects to unlock its substantial resource base, accelerate the country’s industrialisation and provide low-cost power to the country and the region.

One of the energy initiatives under consideration is the Mphanda Nkuwa hydroelectric project, with a projected capacity of approximately 1500 Mw, to be located 60 kilometres downstream of HCB.

Recently, the Executive approved an Integrated Electricity Infrastructure Plan for the period 2018-2043, which consists of a national investment plan in the areas of power generation, transmission and distribution.

A set of programmed investments is expected to be necessary to meet the expected growing demand for energy in the country and the supply to the Southern African region.

With the market study work in preparation, the Executive intends to ascertain the demand forecast, assess supply; identify Mozambique’s grid; analyse the supply demand balance; potential buyers of power from Mphanda Nkuwa, including their current requirement, as well as those prepared to pay and the impact on the financial position of the company Electricidade de Moçambique.
