Mozambique’s Energy Fund (FUNAE) is actively seeking new partners, financing, and investment to accelerate the rollout of solar energy solutions in communities that remain disconnected from the national electricity grid, as part of a strategy to broaden energy access and stimulate economic activity in rural areas.
According to a publication by the Mozambique Information Agency (AIM), the initiative was discussed in Zimbabwe during the 8th Regional Committee Meeting of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) for Africa, which brought together government representatives, diplomatic missions, and energy sector institutions from 25 to 27 August.
FUNAE attended the meeting with the objective of identifying cooperation opportunities and financing mechanisms for solar projects, particularly those targeting communities without access to the electricity grid. The Mozambican delegation was represented by Edson Uamusse, administrator of FUNAE’s Support Division, and Damião Namuera, representing the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME).
Among the targets under discussion was the expansion of solar generation capacity across Africa to 200 gigawatts by 2030 and 1,000 gigawatts by 2050. For Mozambique, the expansion of off-grid solar systems could enable electricity to reach remote areas without relying exclusively on the extension of conventional grid infrastructure.
The meeting also addressed the use of solar energy in agriculture, through irrigation systems, product processing, and cold storage, with potential to increase productivity and generate new income streams for rural communities.
Another topic discussed was the expansion of Solar Rooftop solutions — the installation of solar systems on building rooftops — which could open new avenues for private investment and diversification of electricity generation.
Despite the continent’s considerable solar potential, project implementation continues to be constrained by the availability of financing and the perceived risks associated with such investments. Against this backdrop, resource mobilisation and the development of financing mechanisms featured among the meeting’s key priorities.
For Mozambique, participation in the gathering represents an opportunity to forge new partnerships and attract resources directed at rural electrification, with solar energy viewed not merely as a means of lighting communities, but as an instrument for energising agriculture, small businesses, and other economic activities.
