In his last report to the nation, delivered this Wednesday (7) at the Assembly of the Republic in Maputo, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi highlighted the significant growth in electricity coverage in the country, “which increased from 51 per cent to 64 per cent between 2015 and 2023”.
The head of state underlined the commitment made in his inaugural speech in January 2015, in which he promised to focus on “development programmes and strategies based on the districts and localities, where our people live and face real problems, capitalising on the potential and opportunities of each area,” he recalled.
In his speech, Filipe Nyusi emphasised the government’s initiatives to build and maintain infrastructure with the aim of improving the population’s quality of life.
The President presented some of the progress made in recent years, mentioning the electrification of district headquarters and the expansion of the energy supply service to the headquarters of administrative posts.
“The electricity coverage rate in our country more than doubled from 2015 to 2023. When I took office in 2015, our EDM had less than 1.5 million customers; last year, 2023, the number of customers rose to 3.2 million,” revealed the President, also emphasising that Mozambican is working to become a source of energy for the entire southern region of the continent. “It’s no longer a promise, it’s a certainty,” he said.
“No country, no economy can be sustainable without a network of infrastructures that extends to the entire national territory. That’s why our concern is with the district, the locality and the population,” he emphasised.
Filipe Nyusi assured that building a support base for development is one of the legacies of his government, promoting energy, water, the construction of schools, hospitals, roads and bridges. “Our administration is committed to continuing to improve the living conditions of the population, guaranteeing infrastructure and essential services in all regions of the country,” concluded the President.
